Beekeeper removes 60,000 honeybees from Utah cabin

SALT LAKE CITY — It was the biggest beehive that that Ogden beekeeper Vic Bachman has ever removed — a dozen feet long, packed inside the eve of a cabin in Ogden Valley.

“We figure we got 15 pounds of bees out of there,” said Bachman, who said that converts to about 60,000 honeybees.

Man writes his own obituary, comes clean about not really having Ph.D., stealing safe

Dr. Val Patterson, Ph.D., used his obituary as an opportunity to tell the world some surprising facts about himself, including: He didn’t actually have a Ph.D.; and yes, he’s the guy who stole that company safe a few decades ago.

The Utah man, who died at age 59 of throat cancer on July 10, prepared in advance a light-hearted summary of his life that was published in The Salt Lake Tribune’s obituary section on Sunday. In it, he described growing up in Salt Lake City, meeting the love of his life, traveling, and spending time with good friends.

Nearly 9,000 evacuated as Utah fire explodes

Thousands of homes were evacuated from two small Utah communities on Friday as high winds whipped up a brush fire triggered by target shooters and pushed the flames toward houses and a nearby explosives factory.

The so-called Dump fire erupted Thursday in the Kiowa Valley near a landfill for Saratoga Springs, a town of 18,000 on the west shore of Utah Lake, about 35 miles south of Salt Lake City.
