At the Newtown General Store in Connecticut, Pete Leone has been inundated with calls from around the country, including one from Elizabeth Glass of Annapolis, Maryland.
The mother of a student in first grade, Glass called to offer a gift of coffee to Newtown residents. Her call is part of a massive, unexpected wave of goodwill that began online last weekend with a simple idea: “Imagine if we all committed 20 acts of kindness to honor the lost children of Newtown.”

On the day of the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., Warren Tidwell came home early from work because he wasn’t feeling well. As he watched the story unfold on TV, his heartwrenching feeling only worsened. “I had to do something,” the 34-year-old auto parts salesman told NBC News. He logged onto Facebook and within minutes had started a new page: 26 Acts of Kindness.

Shauna Groenewold, the Web administrator for the state Department of Education in Lincoln, Neb., found out about #20Acts on Twitter, where she says she gets most of her news. Not knowing what she could do to help victims of Sandy Hook, it seemed like a great way to spread some good.

Ann Curry’s inspiration for #26Acts of Kindness dates back to an experience she had while reporting on the genocide in Darfur in 2007, and the joy that giving Polaroid pictures of children brought to mothers who had never held a photograph of their kids.
